Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The central objective of this module is to introduce Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to students. In doing so it is intended to provide a framework for examining and evaluating the actions and performance of organisations in the context of sustainable and socially responsible activity. While CSR is a relatively new term its roots can be traced to a variety of philosophical, ethical and environmental discourses. Accordingly there are a number of different approaches to CSR and definitions as to what exactly CSR comprises.

Syllabus:

Introduction to CSR; defining CSR; the social, political and economic context; stake holders Vs shareholders; issues concerning sustainability; ethics; CSR corporate and managerial behaviour; performance evaluation and performance reporting; globalisation and CSR; stakeholder relationship management; business planning.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Value and explain the relationship between CSR, corporate and managerial behaviour. Explain and critique the various components of socially responsible behaviour. Propose possible actions of an organisation to its environment. Apply critical and interpretative skills to an evaluation of corporate activity.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Embrace and appreciate the often interdependent and complex ethical, managerial, organisational and economic issues involved with socially responsible business management

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module will be delivered in a blended format with the online component being facilitated using the University of Limerick's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). While based on essential academic theories, concepts and techniques, there will also be significant focus afforded to individual personal development allied with the practical application of learning within the workplace.
